De Kinderen van Ruinerwold plot

Ruinerwold becomes world news when a hidden farm is discovered, where a family has been living secretly and unregistered for years. The four oldest children tell their story once to documentary maker Jessica Villerius. They tell about their hidden existence, their father's faith and the alleged abuse within the family. But they also celebrate their first birthday, receive ID, visit their father in prison and follow the lawsuit against him. An exclusive portrait of a family that the Netherlands did not know existed until 13 October 2019.

Het is misschien een beetje rommelig, maar toch (na 2 afl.) is dit op z'n minst interessant, waarbij je van een aantal kinderen zelf de antwoorden krijgt op de vele vragen die er waren. Er komen ook per afl. nieuwe zaken naar voren, zodat echt niet in afl. 1 alle kruit al verschoten is. Ik heb deze Gerrit Jan zelf een aantal keren ontmoet, lang geleden, en een aantal kinderen waren daar soms ook bij, maar dat het ('achter de schermen', zogezegd) zo bont was en nog veel bonter moest worden, dat gaat m'n verstand te boven. Weet ook nog niet of deze vier kinderen al meteen goed konden overzien waar ze aan begonnen toen deze serie werd gemaakt. Hoe dan ook moedig.

It may be a bit messy, but still (after 2 episodes) this is at least interesting, where you get the answers to the many questions from a number of children themselves. New issues also emerge in each episode, so that not all the powder has been used up in episode 1.

I met this Gerrit Jan myself a number of times, a long time ago, and a number of children were sometimes there too, but the fact that it ('behind the scenes', so to speak) was so colorful and had to become much more colorful is beyond me.' beyond understanding.

I also don't know yet whether these four children could immediately see what they were getting into when this series was made. Anyway, brave.

Redelijke documentaire. Het verhaal is natuurlijk enorm verontrustend voor Nederlandse begrippen, maar de documentaire maakt niet mega veel indruk. De documentaire is vooral erg rommelig gemonteerd (niet logisch) en er ontbreken belangrijke delen van het verhaal. Zo krijgen we vrijwel niets te horen over het verhaal van de andere verdachte binnen dit verhaal en leren we ook weinig van de kinderen die daadwerkelijke al die tijd opgesloten zaten. De slotaflevering vond ik het sterkste door de complexe rol die Israël moest aannemen.

Reasonable documentary. The story is of course very disturbing for Dutch standards, but the documentary does not make much of an impression. The documentary is especially messy edited (not logical) and important parts of the story are missing. For example, we get to hear almost nothing about the story of the other suspect in this story and we also learn little from the children who were actually locked up all that time. I liked the final episode the most because of the complex role that Israel had to take on.

Aangrijpend natuurlijk zo'n toestanden en daar doen de oudste kinderen uitvoerig hun meningen en ook hun twijfels over uit de doeken en sommige getuigenissen grijpen je echt naar de keel. Anderzijds vond ik toch dat enkele omstandigheden, zoals de impact van de school en waar de oudere kinderen toen ze het huis verlieten terechtkwamen en hoe ze leefden tot het moment van de aanklacht, niet echt aan bod kwamen. Al bij al een merkwaardige documentaire.

Such situations are gripping, of course, and the eldest children elaborately explain their opinions and also their doubts about it and some testimonials really grab you by the throat.

On the other hand, I felt that some circumstances, such as the impact of the school and where the older children ended up when they left the house and how they lived up to the time of the indictment, were not really addressed.

All in all, a remarkable documentary.
