Indrukwekkend en af en toe schokkend. Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen met haar af en toe erg persoonlijke document over hoe het is om geadopteerd te zijn uit een ver land, vol zelfspot gaat ze daarbij niets uit de weg. De af en toe wat fragmentarische stijl lag me in het begin niet erg goed, maar na een tijdje blijkt dat wel precies de juiste keuze te zijn. Bijvoorbeeld de relatie van Kelly-Qian met haar vader komt er daardoor goed uit - vertederend om zoveel vanzelfsprekende liefde te zien, ondanks wat je over de vier delen allemaal te weten komt. Tegelijkertijd ook wel echt schokkend hoe de instanties en de overheid steek na steek laten vallen, en dat zou nog niet zo erg zijn als er tenminste van geleerd werd. Maar ook dat moet je wel met een vergrootglas zoeken. Het fenomeen van de kinderwens blijft voor mij een van de grootste raadsels van de moderne samenleving, en onlosmakelijk daaraan verbonden is hoe diezelfde samenleving daar in officiele verschijning zo makkelijk voor in de houding springt. Wellicht heeft dat iets met het geloof te maken, wellicht is het het 'white saviour'-syndroom. Hoe dan ook, maar weer eens een signaal dat we daar toch echt eens overheen moeten zien te raken.

Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen with her occasionally very personal document about what it is like to be adopted from a distant country, and she does not shy away from anything. The occasionally fragmentary style did not suit me very well at first, but after a while it turns out to be exactly the right choice. For example, Kelly-Qian's relationship with her father comes out well - endearing to see so much obvious love, despite what you learn about the four parts.

At the same time, it is really shocking how the authorities and the government fail sting after sting, and that would not be so bad if at least we learned from it. But you also have to look for that with a magnifying glass. The phenomenon of the desire to have children remains for me one of the greatest mysteries of modern society, and inextricably linked to it is how that same society so easily jumps to attention in its official appearance. Perhaps that has something to do with religion, perhaps it is the 'white saviour' syndrome. Anyway, yet another signal that we really need to get over this.
