Sympathiek rock'n'roll figuur zoals je die niet veel tegenkomt op de kookzenders. De meeste chefs helpen je netjes door een receptje heen om thuis simpelweg na te brouwen (wat ik persoonlijk ook wel interessant kan vinden, al doe ik dat zelf nauwelijks) of anders is het wel een ordinaire kookwedstrijd (en daar kijk ik ook wel es naar - en zie ik soms zelfs Mr. Bourdain zelve opduiken). Maar hier doet 'Tony', zoals hij overal genoemd wordt, dat dus niet; hij zoekt over de hele wereld achteraf plekken uit gebaseerd op wat hij zelf nog wil per se proeven of wat een gewaardeerd collega hem aangeraden heeft, die vaak ver verwijderd zijn van de door toeristen suf gebaande paden. Maar soms ook zeer exclusieve tenten waar je als gewone sterveling nooit zal komen, omdat de man nu eenmaal connecties heeft in de culinaire wereld. Verder: neemt geen blad voor de mond en wil nog wel es van leer trekken tegen verschillende maatschappelijke en politieke zaken in betreffende landen of gewoon tegen zijn eigen land, ook leuk. Alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik het zag, maar een dikke 3,5* is het toch zeker waard.

Sympathetic rock'n'roll figure like you don't come across often on the cooking channels. Most chefs will help you neatly through a recipe to simply brew at home (which I personally find interesting, although I hardly do that myself) or else it is an ordinary cooking competition (and I sometimes watch that too - and sometimes I even see Mr. Bourdain himself).

But here 'Tony', as he's called everywhere, doesn't do that; he subsequently seeks out places all over the world based on what he still really wants to taste or what a valued colleague has recommended to him, which are often far off the beaten track by tourists. But sometimes also very exclusive tents where you as a mere mortal will never go, because the man has connections in the culinary world.

Furthermore: does not mince words and still wants to make a point against various social and political issues in the relevant countries or just against his own country, which is also nice.

It's been a while since I saw it, but a big 3.5* is definitely worth it.
