Nice series about faith fundamentalism and how someone who is moderate begins to see that there are things that are not acceptable, such as the suppression of women of course.....nothing new in many faiths

When Brenda Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones - Normal People, Cold Feet) and her 15-month-old baby are found dead, detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield), a convinced and devout Mormon, investigates. This Mormon Murder Mystery takes a chilling look at fundamentalism in this Latter Day Saints (LDS) faith community. In flashbacks we are introduced to the large Lafferty family. As Pyre gets closer to the truth, he increasingly questions his own faith.
Under The Banner Of Heaven is based on the true book by John Krakauer, who also wrote Into The Wild. With Jason Bateman and Ron Howard serving as co-executive producers, you'd think this show couldn't go wrong. That's not quite the case. The first episodes with many scenes for Edgar-Jones are lively and convincing. But the flashbacks of LDS founder Joseph Smith's journey from hell around 1830 add little to the story. As a religious moral sketch in the eighties in Utah, Under The Banner Of Heaven convinces. At the same time, the constant references to the Heavenly Father and all kinds of revelations arouse annoyance. The image that ultimately lingers is the story about the Lafferty's as a cabinet of curiosities. All played by excellent actors, fortunately.

Exciting, very well-developed series about a brutal murder within a community of fundamentalist Mormons. Andrew Garfield is excellent in the lead, as is the wonderfully laconic Gil Birmingham as his right-hand man here, but in fact the whole cast is first class. The many flashbacks are ingeniously incorporated into the structure of the story and actually add something here. The script is also very intelligently put together and many interesting (religious) issues are discussed. With seven episodes, all very strong, this is exactly long enough.
