Smoke is a profound and ingenious psychological thriller. Creator and writer Dennis Lehane (Black Bird, The Outsider, Mr. Mercedes) knows his classics. All the storylines are excellently constructed and logically interconnected. Smoke looks like Se7en on fire, is initially mysterious but remains incredibly suspenseful until the very end. This is impressive, because the 9-part series quickly reveals some of its secrets.
Taron Egerton (Black Bird) plays Dave Gudsen impressively. As a fire investigator, loving partner, and writer, and increasingly, as a traumatized, highly flammable narcissist. The duality of Egerton's lead role aligns with the meaning of fire in Smoke: it embodies both creation and destruction, transformation and danger, and symbolizes energy, warmth, passion, and purification. Smoke is irresistibly good.
