Pryatki plot

Father and daughter play hide and seek in their apartment. Everything seems normal until the father can't find his daughter anywhere… Later, a video surfaced on the internet in which the girl is holding a sign with a cryptic set of numbers. She turns out to be the first in a series of mysterious disappearances in a small industrial town. Young detectives Varta Naumova and Maksim Shumov take on the complex case. Varta is aloof and extremely protective of her personal space, while Maksim comes across as an easy-going, sociable guy. Both carry traumas, and this case touches them deeply. They take the search for the children and the kidnapper more and more personally as they face their respective pasts.

Pryatki season 1

This Ukrainian thriller series neatly follows the laws of the Nordic noir. Troubled detectives on duty, opposing leadership, atmospheric images and a reasonable plot. Here we see Ukraine in its most desolate, drab, gray and depressing state. Every color seems to have been completely eliminated from the series. With the exception of main character Varta Naumova's red curls; they contrast nicely with the misty industrial landscapes, the garbage dumps and the concrete Eastern Bloc architecture. The subplot about the corrupt colleague, erm...who is not corrupt here, is insufficiently developed and quite obligatory. The same goes for the scenes in the women's prison. And while this series is more atmospheric than exciting, I enjoyed watching it. If there is an S2, the sun may still emerge from the gray mist.
