If you enjoy dressing up, special effects, and a superficial story, superhero adaptations usually cater to your every need. After seeing Wonder Man and the recommendation that the eight-part series Lanterns would primarily take place on Earth, with a True Detective-like atmosphere, I decided to take the gamble anyway. Unfortunately, Lanterns is quite disappointing.

To begin with, the comparison to True Detective is based on very little. Lanterns is never truly mysterious, and it certainly doesn't get exciting. As with so many superhero adaptations, this series is also rather generic: a bit of humor, some dark spectacle, and the necessary special effects — with protective soap bubbles that bear a suspicious resemblance to Marcel's Green Soap.

The relationship between protagonists Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) also adds little. The tense, sometimes somewhat clumsy dynamic between the experienced and the new superhero is supposed to provide the necessary depth, but remains primarily a thin thread in a story about aliens and the hunt for the mysterious Manhunter. Consequently, Lanterns falls significantly short in terms of drama.

While DC Comics helped lay the foundation for the superhero genre with the Superman comic in 1938, Lanterns in 2026 feels primarily like warmed-up leftovers: familiar, predictable, and mainly intended for the die-hard or uncritical fan.
