I can't remember everything about the Irene Huss series from 2007. But I definitely thought S1 was worth it at the time. The female Wallander was called this detective mother of two teenage daughters. Well, that was a bit too much honour, but atmosphere and pace were a bit like Mankell's books and series icon.

Now there's the Huss series. Named after one of Irene's daughters, Katarina (Karin Franz Körlof). In five episodes of almost one and a half hours we see how Katarina starts her training with the police in Gothenburg. The first two episodes are fine and show a smooth and ambitious Huss. Unfortunately don't get any real connection with Katarina; she is not extremely likeable and her choices are sometimes inimitable. We also see her mother, now played by Kajsa Ernst. The common thread in the story is an escalated meeting between the police and demonstrators during a Euro summit. Although all episodes are reasonably well put together with a few nice plot twists, Huss also belongs to the large stream of average Scandikrimis where quantity is more important than quality. But maybe I just watch too many series. Therefore, let me round up my rating.

Enough with pain and effort. Compared to the old two seasons, I found this new season about daughter Katarina only mediocre. Mother Irene has turned into a sourpuss, part 1 really had to get going and the common thread about the mystery behind the riots started to get pretty boring at one point. In addition, a police force, which half consists of a bunch of crazy people, so that the actual crime stories were completely pushed into the background. Too bad, because there were some good stories with it. No, this was more drama than crime.
