Damages plot

Damages follows the life of Ellen Parsons, a newly graduated brilliant and ambitious lawyer who joins Patty Hewes, a tough aunt who is at the top of the New York law world. Ellen is immediately assigned to the firm's most important case: the joint lawsuit of 5,000 ex-employees against their company CEO Arthur Frobisher. As Patty battles Frobisher and his lawyer, Ellen learns what it takes to win, at any cost, and that not only fortunes but lives are at stake.

The indestructible Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) is broken down layer by layer this season by her protégé Ellen Parsons (Rose McByrne) in a magnificent bitch fight. Both ladies are evenly matched; from the very first moment it is clear that there will be casualties. This second season is also packed with unexpected twists, memorable supporting roles, sadistic power shifts and a solidly written, high-level plot. The cast has a lot of triple A stars like William Hurt, Timothy Olyphant and Marcia Gay-Harden (well on this one and certainly not as annoying as usual).

It reminds me the most of The Wire, and not just because a number of characters from that series can also be found in this season. The similarity lies mainly in the fact that the makers of this series have also chosen to highlight a different ''case'', in this case corruption in the energy market, in which the characters nevertheless come up against each other. Frobisher has faded into the background for a while, but in the form of Walter Kendrick we have a nice old-fashioned bastard as a bad guy.

Unfortunately, the final season finale disappoints slightly, as the loose ends come together just a little too easily. But I'm still eagerly looking forward to the third series, which, if all goes well, will conclude the ongoing storylines.
