Clarice plot

Clarice is set in 1993, a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs. FBI Agent Clarice Starling returns to the field to pursue serial killers and sexual predators as she navigates the high political world of Washington, DC Clarice is both brilliant and vulnerable. However, her complex psychological makeup, stemming from a difficult childhood, allows her to find her voice in the male world she works in, and to escape the family secrets that have haunted her all her life.

Waar Clarice Starling erg sterk neergezet werd in de films The Silence Of The Lambs en Haniball, wordt het karakter hier in mijn ogen te populair weergegeven. Anno 2021 wordt Clarice nog wel neergezet in een omgeving die vrouwonvriendelijk is, maar de balans tussen dat gegeven en de reactie hierop behoorlijk verschillend. Het oogt allemaal veel goedkoper, meer voor de snelheid dan voor een goed doordacht verhaal. Het karakter moet sterk zijn maar ook gevoelig, en die combi is een stuk minder uitgevoerd dan er in de films is laten zien. Ook een stuk minder geloofwaardig en wat domme acties die zo nu en dan de kop op steken. Weer eens goedkoop willen scoren op een oud succes, en ja....... wederom een jammerlijk stuk beeldmateriaal. Terwijl het karakter en haar leven door de originele schrijver een heel mooi verhaal destijds is geschonken voor twee prachtige films, het hier schamelijk niet verder komt dan de middelmaat.

Where Clarice Starling was portrayed very strongly in the films The Silence Of The Lambs and Haniball, the character is portrayed too popular here in my opinion. In 2021 Clarice will still be placed in an environment that is misogynistic, but the balance between that fact and the response to it is quite different.

It all looks much cheaper, more for speed than for a well thought out story. The character must be strong but also sensitive, and that combination is a lot less executed than is shown in the films. Also a lot less credible and some stupid actions that pop up every now and then.

Once again wanting to score cheaply on an old success, and yes....... again a pitiful piece of footage. While the character and her life has been given a very nice story by the original writer for two wonderful films at the time, it shamefully does not go beyond mediocrity.

Amerikaans 13-delig thrillerdrama dat zich afspeelt een jaar na de gebeurtenissen in Silence Of The Lambs (SotL). Niet Hannibal Lecter maar Clarice Starling staat hier centraal. Het H-woord zal ik niet meer gebruiken en proberen Clarice op zijn, oké, haar eigen merites beoordelen. Dat valt nog niet mee. Clarice is schatplichtig aan SotL en citeert voortdurend uit deze epische thriller. Kwalitatief is er een wereld van verschil. Clarice gaat vlot van start. De eerste vier afleveringen zijn redelijk tot goed. Een beetje een mix van CSI en een gemiddelde serial killer serie. Vanaf aflevering 5 begint de ellende. Deze aflevering speelt zich af in een kliniek, en lijkt soms meer op een showcase van ongeloofwaardigheden. Hier raakte ik mijn geloof in Clarice een beetje kwijt. De voortdurende flashbacks met nagespeelde scenes uit SotL gaan op den duur irriteren. En gaan ten koste van het verhaal, dat toch al vrij dun en rommelig is. Kortom, Clarice kan zo de kast weer in. Naast de mottenballen. En wil je echt een goed serial killer drama zien: kijk dan eens naar S2 van Mindhunter.

American 13-part thriller drama set one year after the events of Silence Of The Lambs (SotL). Not Hannibal Lecter but Clarice Starling is central here. I'll stop using the H word and try to judge Clarice on his, okay, her own merits. That is not enough. Clarice is indebted to SotL and constantly quotes from this epic thriller. There is a world of difference in quality.

Clarice gets off to a smooth start. The first four episodes are fair to good. A bit of a mix of CSI and your average serial killer series. The trouble starts from episode 5. This episode is set in a clinic, and at times looks more like a showcase of inconsistency. This is where I kind of lost my faith in Clarice.

The continuous flashbacks with re-enacted scenes from SotL eventually become irritating. And at the expense of the story, which is already quite thin and messy. In short, Clarice can go back into the closet. Next to the mothballs. And if you really want to see a good serial killer drama: take a look at S2 from Mindhunter.
