Del Harris is the police chief of the small gloomy Pennsylvania village of Buell. Due to the departure of the once flourishing oil and steel industry, many inhabitants have been pushed closer and closer to the (financial) abyss. Many try to numb the intolerance of their existence with drugs and excessive drug use. Hard work is no longer for Del Harris. His retirement is in sight and he wants to get there as undisturbed as possible. However, that planning threatens to go wrong when the son of his secret love is suspected of murder.

American Rust van Showtime gaat overduidelijk de concurrentie aan met Mare of Easttown van HBO en Maid van Netflix. Van deze drie series is American Rust met afstand de minste. De serie is ontwikkeld door Dan Futterman (The Looming Tower) en vertelt het verhaal van een aantal gezinnen in het fictieve stadje Buell, in de buurt van Pittsburgh. En dus gaat het over de teloorgang van de ijzer- en staalindustrie met hoge werkloosheid, armoede, slechte werkomstandigheden en drugs- en medicatiemisbruik. Dat alles in een vaal, bleek en vergankelijk landschap. Aan politiechef Del Harris (Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom) de taak om alle problemen in goede banen te leiden. Er is bovendien een misdrijf gepleegd waarbij de zoon van zijn vriendin Grace (Maura Tierney - ER, The Affair) betrokken is. Naast deze hoofdplot kent American Rust tal van meanderende subplots die de fut flink uit het verhaal halen. Wat een enerverende roadtrip had kunnen zijn, wordt hier een bustrip voor 85-plussers naar de Keukenhof. Je heb slow-burners, je hebt zeer trage series en je hebt American Rust. Het laatste woord hoef je niet te vertalen. Toch gebeurt er genoeg in de 9 afleveringen, daar ligt het niet aan. Maar het rommelige scenario vanaf aflevering 4 en het acteerwerk - Daniels is op rustgevende medicatie gezet -, maken het een zeer lange zit. Het helpt ook niet dat je weinig gevoel bij de karakters ontwikkelt. Gelukkig is het niet alleen kommer en kwel. Alex Neustaedter speelt uitstekend de zoon van Grace. En de kick-off is prima. Een hele krappe voldoende. Net zo mistroostig als Buell.

Showtime's American Rust is clearly competing with HBO's Mare of Easttown and Netflix's Maid. Of these three series, American Rust is by far the least. Developed by Dan Futterman (The Looming Tower), the series tells the story of several families in the fictional town of Buell, near Pittsburgh. And so it is about the decline of the iron and steel industry with high unemployment, poverty, poor working conditions and drug and medication abuse. All this in a pale, pale and ephemeral landscape.

Police Chief Del Harris (Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom) is tasked with managing all the problems. In addition, a crime has been committed involving his girlfriend's son Grace (Maura Tierney - ER, The Affair). In addition to this main plot, American Rust has numerous meandering subplots that take the spirit out of the story. What could have been an exciting road trip, here becomes a bus trip for the over-85s to Keukenhof. You have slow-burners, you have very slow runs and you have American Rust. You don't have to translate the last word.

Still, enough happens in the 9 episodes, that's not the issue. But the messy scenario from episode 4 and the acting - Daniels is put on soothing medication - make it a very long sit. It also doesn't help that you don't develop a lot of feeling with the characters. Fortunately, it is not all doom and gloom. Alex Neustaedter plays Grace's son very well. And the kick-off is fine. A very tight enough. Just as gloomy as Buell.
