You Rang, M'Lord? plot

Alf Stokes (Paul Shane) and James Twelvetrees (Jeffrey Holland) first meet in the trenches of France during World War I. They find the body of an officer, and thinking he is dead, Alf robs him of his valuables. However, the officer, the Honorable Teddy Meldrum (Michael Knowles), turns out to be alive, so they take him to the hospital. Ten years later, James works in the household of Lord Meldrum (Donald Hewlett), Teddy's brother. Then Alf suddenly shows up and, much against James's will, is hired as a butler. Alf's daughter Ivy (Su Pollard) gets a job as a maid. However, her relationship with Alf must remain a secret.

The historical location makes this series special. It is a parody of Upstairs, Downstairs and a satire on British class thinking. Everyone knows their place in the London mansion during the interwar period. There is a glass wall between the noble family and the servants. There is also a strict hierarchy between the members of staff, with the butler at the top and the scullery maid at the bottom. The servants speak with a flat accent, different from the aristocratic English of their superiors.

Downstairs revolves around the concocted schemes of the obese butler; above about the deviant sexual preferences of the family members. Scandals must be covered up: Lord Meldrew's adulterous relationship, Teddy's obsession with maids and Cissy's sexual orientation. She broke new ground as the first lesbian character in a sitcom.

Fashion and interiors of the 1920s are well recreated. Dadaism and Charleston belonged to the culture of that time. Early cars and radios were modern technology. Sociopolitical themes are the aftermath of the Great War, colonization and workers' strikes. Lord Meldrew and livery James want to maintain the class system; Cissy and Stokes rebel against it.

It's not Perry & Croft's best-known sitcom, but it's their best. Typical are the catchphrases (Least said, soonest mended!) and stereotyped actions, such as throwing food. Paul Shane and Su Pollard excel as the shady butler and the naive housemaid. This is British humor at its best.
