Bridgette is a twenty-something from the south of Boston, United States, who yearns for relationships, sex and a career. However, she soon finds out that these wishes clash with reality. Birdgette is a young single mother and that makes her life difficult enough.

Leading actor Frankie Shaw does almost everything himself in SMILF; acting (the leading role), writing, directing and producing. For Shaw, SMILF (that's right, that's what those letters stand for) is undoubtedly her magnum opus. A lot happens in this American series. Perhaps partly because a guest writer has been invited for each episode to give the script new impulses. And to leave his or her mark on the story. Call it lively. Tiresome too.

Is it funny? Although the series is known as a comedy, there is little to laugh about. Fortunately, SMILF never quite drops below the lower limit. The entanglements of a single young mother surrounded by a handful of nasty characters is above all a painful search for freedom.
