Mary Tyler Moore plot

Mary Richards moves to Minneapolis, Minnesota after her two-year relationship breaks down. She is applying for a job at the secretariat of TV station WJM-tv, but this vacancy has already been filled. To her surprise, she is offered another job: co-producer of the six o'clock news, paid less than the job she had first envisioned. At work, she befriends her strict boss Lou Grant, who also has a soft side, the sympathetic news writer Murray Slaughter and the not-so-smart newscaster Ted Baxter.

Mary Tyler Moore season 1

The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a pretty decent sitcom with the occasional sly innuendo. An independent bachelor in his thirties, the lead character Mary Richards went against traditional gender roles. You can't call her a hard career woman, because she commits blunders and makes private phone calls during working hours.

She is neat and organized; her upstairs neighbor Rhoda chaotic and impulsive. However, a close friendship develops between them. Mary's boss Lou Grant is introduced as a fat, gruff grumbler, but gradually his charm and enthusiasm as a newsmaker surface. Other side characters unfortunately remain one-dimensional.

It is set in Minneapolis, but the vast majority of it was shot in a Los Angeles TV studio. A nice detail in the office space are the six clocks that indicate the time in six different time zones. No fewer than three spin-offs would arise from this: Rhoda, Phyllis and especially Lou Grant.

Favorite episodes: 1, 7, 18.
