Cheers plot

Cheers is a bar in Boston, the owner is Sam Malone. Sam is a former baseball player with the Boston Red Sox. He had to stop his career early due to his alcohol addiction. 'Coach' Ernie Pantusso helps him run the bar and is Sam's former coach. When Coach dies, he is replaced shortly after by the almost equally naive Woody, an old acquaintance of Coach. The somewhat nervous Diane Chambers is a waitress at the pub, who occasionally has a relationship with owner Sam Malone. She doesn't get along with Carla, a small but slick waitress who didn't like her mouth. Regular Norm is an accountant who spends most of his time in the bar avoiding his wife. Usually sitting next to him is his buddy Cliff Clavin, a postman with an inferiority complex who tries to compensate by debiting the most improbable tidbits and facts. Regular Frasier Crane is a psychiatrist who pops up in the bar every now and then.

A cafe is a suitable location for a sitcom. There is a cozy atmosphere; everyone is welcome. The employees and the regulars are regular characters, but people of all kinds walk in, each with their own story. Each episode begins with an teaser - a short, comedic preview that can stand on its own. Then follows the jingle Where Everybody Knows Your Name, in which Gary Portnoy sings about the café as a place to escape the worries of everyday life.

The limitation in space is offset by the brilliantly written dialogue and the chemistry between the actors. The humor is verbal and situational, with quick replies, double entendre and misunderstandings. They concoct plans and try to outsmart each other. However, part of the quality comes from the serious themes incorporated into it.

It's ironic for a sober alcoholic to run a drinking establishment. The infamous Black Book testifies to Sam's past as a womanizer, but few new conquests follow during the series. There is a mixture of attraction and repulsion between him and Diane. During their dialogues, they can switch very quickly from one to the other, and from a mocking to a sensitive tone.

The secondary characters have their own character. Cliff is the champion of trivial facts; Norm (!) the sociable daddy who can never keep a job for long; Coach the sympathetic scatterbrain; Carla the cynical woman with too many children. The seven permanent actors are perfectly cast and attuned to each other. Some guest roles are also very nice, eg. con man Harry the Hat. The Americans have never made a better comic series.

Favorite Episodes: 1, 2, 10, 16, 19, 20.
