Beggars and Choosers plot

A look behind the scenes of a television channel. Rob Malone is the head of programming for LGT, a channel that fights for the highest ratings, but usually loses that battle. Lori Volpone and casting director Malcolm Laffey assist Malone. They have to deal with the TV stars, close big deals and keep the channel financially stable. Malone takes too much on his hands, the station owner keeps slipping in and out of a coma, the casting head is accused of sexual misconduct and the vice president who develops the series tries to move up the ranks no matter what.

Beggars and Choosers season 1

If you look at the poster like this, you can also mistake it for a smooth soap opera, but this was a fine black comedy series with also a lot of drama about the ups and downs of a television channel that has to meet all kinds of commercial wishes - especially viewing figures score and get the programming done. All kinds of personal worries are also discussed, by the way.

I thought it was the beautiful Portia de Rossi in the role of Lori, but it was Charlotte Ross (not wrong either) and that's why I had a hard time finding the series at first (I couldn't remember the title). If I'm not mistaken, this was broadcast by the VPRO at the time. Very worthwhile, but I don't think it can be found anywhere (yes, on YT in not too good quality) and no DVD release either... too bad.

4.0*.
