The Boyle family is a typical American family from the 1970s. Father Harry owns a wholesaler and his wife Irma is a housewife. Together they have three children: Chet, Alice and Jamie. Chet is 22 and has dropped out of school. Alice is 16 and always side with her mother and Jamie is 9 and a true capitalist. The family lives on Elm Street in Los Angeles and they do their best to get through life as best they can.
