Onderschatte animatie-serie die nooit de legendarische status van bijvoorbeeld Beavis en Butthead heeft weten te krijgen. Jammer, want ook Duckman geeft een zeer raak beeld van de jaren negentig. Het begint al met de door Jason Alexander ingesproken Duckman, de seksistische nietsnut die maar continu vist naar de bevestiging van zijn kinderen. Hij mag dan wel een privédetective zijn, maar zijn grootste zoektocht is toch echt naar zijn eigen identiteit in een chaotische wereld. Mijn favoriete karakter is natuurlijk de altijd scherpe Cornfed, die Duckman steeds vlijmscherp zijn plaats wijst. Of die wee eens een idiote vaardigheid opgedaan heeft in een vorig leven buiten de camera. Terugkerende thema's zijn dan ook hoe deze half-eend/half-man probeert om zich staande te houden in een wereld die aan de ene kant perfectie afdwingt, maar aan de andere kant ook zijn lelijke schaduwzijde kent. Reality-televisie wordt lekker dik aangezet als de ranzige rotzooi. Scholen worden gepresenteerd als onneembare vestingen waar politie en leger de boel schoon moeten houden. En de liefde, ach, de liefde, in een briljante episode vindt Duckman eindelijk weer een nieuw lief in de operator van de 9-11 centrale. Hij zwijmelt over haar zoetgevooisde stem Puntje van zorg: ze is zo lelijk dat ze, als een soort Caspar the Friendly Ghost, haar omgeving doodsangsten uit laat staan. Veel van de grappen uit de serie zijn terug te voeren op de lelijkheid van de maatschappij, die mooi verbeeld wordt door gebruik te maken van (bewust gekozen) lelijke animatie en de meest bizarre gedrochten in bijrollen. De grappen zijn fijn verdeeld tussen botte slapstick, intelligente satirische humor en vlijmscherp geschreven dialogen.

Underrated animated series that never managed to achieve the legendary status of, for example, Beavis and Butthead. Too bad, because Duckman also gives a very striking picture of the nineties. It starts with the Duckman voiced by Jason Alexander, the sexist good-for-nothing who is constantly fishing for the confirmation of his children. He may be a private detective, but his greatest quest is to find his own identity in a chaotic world. My favorite character is of course the always sharp Cornfed, who always points Duckman in his place. Or who once picked up an idiotic skill in a past life off-camera.

Recurring themes are how this half-duck/half-man tries to survive in a world that on the one hand enforces perfection, but on the other hand also has its ugly dark side. Reality television is turned on nice and thick as the raunchy crap. Schools are presented as impregnable fortresses where the police and army have to keep things clean. And love, oh, love, in a brilliant episode, Duckman finally finds a new love in the operator of the 9-11 exchange. He swoons over her sweet-voiced voice. Point of concern: she is so ugly that, like a kind of Caspar the Friendly Ghost, she leaves her surroundings terrified.

Many of the jokes in the series can be traced back to the ugliness of society, which is beautifully portrayed by using (consciously chosen) ugly animation and the most bizarre monstrosities in supporting roles. The jokes are finely divided between blunt slapstick, intelligent satirical humor and razor-sharp written dialogue.
