Kapitein Zeppos plot

Based on the Flemish book series of the same name by Louis De Groof. Captain Zeppos (a pseudonym he obtained in Greece) is a man who one day arrives on horseback in the municipality of Belder. Here he befriends, among others, the young Ben Kurrel and experiences all kinds of adventures in which a mystery has to be solved. From the 2nd season, the captain often drives an Amphicar, a car that can both drive and sail. The first season was titled "Belderbos", seasons 2 and 3 were named "Eglantier" and "Tweng".

Iconische jeugdserie van de brt (de latere vrt) die het in die tijd zelfs tot ver over de landsgrenzen heen heeft geschopt. Van voor mijn tijd, en ook al val ik niet in de juiste leeftijdscategorie, blij dat ik dit eerste seizoen gezien heb. Senne Rouffaer speelt niet enkel de hoofdrol van Kapitein Zeppos maar staat ook in voor de regie, en heeft me aangenaam verrast met de dynamiek, dollyshots, gebruik van close-ups e.d. Opvallende keuze ook dat de acteurs met regelmaat de vierde wand doorbreken. Vlotte verhaallijn waarin de nadruk ligt op het avontuur. De acteurs doen hun job zoals het hoort, al komt de keuze voor standaard Nederlands niet altijd naturel over. En verder is het vandaag vooral een nostalgische terugblik op het Vlaanderen van meer dan vijftig jaar geleden. De wereld en technologie zijn intussen natuurlijk radicaal veranderd. Geheel gefilmd op buitenlocaties, lijkt het, waaronder ook een sequentie in Brussel (we herkennen o.a. de Kunstberg). Weliswaar bedient Kapitein Zeppos zich nog niet van zijn legendarische amphicar 770, dewelke geïntroduceerd wordt in het tweede seizoen.

From before my time, and even though I don't fall into the right age category, glad I saw this first season. Senne Rouffaer not only plays the lead role of Kapitein Zeppos, but is also responsible for the direction, and has pleasantly surprised me with the dynamics, dolly shots, use of close-ups, etc. It is also striking that the actors regularly break through the fourth wall. Smooth storyline with an emphasis on the adventure. The actors do their job as they should, although the choice for standard Dutch does not always come across as natural. And furthermore, today it is mainly a nostalgic look back at Flanders from more than fifty years ago. The world and technology have of course changed radically in the meantime. Filmed entirely on outdoor locations, it seems, including a sequence in Brussels (we recognize the Mont des Arts, among others). It is true that Captain Zeppos is not yet using his legendary amphicar 770, which will be introduced in the second season.
