Peter Jackson has revealed that the producers of the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series initially promised him early drafts of the script only for communication to end with Amazon.
The New Zealand director directed the original Lord of the Rings movie series to enormous critical and commercial success.
The third entry in the franchise, The Return of the King, won 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture.
In November of 2017, Amazon bought the television rights to a Lord of the Rings series for $250 million with a commitment of five seasons set in place.
Jackson says he was eventually ghosted by the producers after previously receiving the promise of a script.
“They asked me if I wanted to be involved — and I — and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script,'” Jackson said on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
“So they said, ‘As soon as we get the first couple scripts, we’ll send them to you.’ And the scripts never showed up. That’s the last thing I heard, which is fine. No complaints at all.”
Jackson looking forward to Lord of the Rings series
Jackson insists he is looking forward to watching the epic series as a fan, despite the perhaps strained relationship with Amazon.
“I’ll be watching it,” he said.
“I’m not the sort of guy who wishes ill will. Filmmaking is hard enough. If somebody makes a good film or TV show, it’s something to celebrate. The one thing I am looking forward to is actually seeing it as a perfectly neutral viewer.”
The official premise of the series reads as:
"Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the series is based on author J. R. R. Tolkien's history of Middle-earth. It begins during a time of relative peace and covers all the major events of Middle-earth's Second Age: the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men. These events take place over thousands of years in Tolkien's original stories but are condensed for the series."
