Masters of the Air plot

It's World War II. 3e aflevering gezien. Deze gaat over de raid op 17 augustus 1943 naar Regensburg/Schweinfurt, de diepste penetratie boven nazi-Duitsland door de 8th US Air Force op dat moment. Die aanval werd nadien beschouwd als een mislukking; 60 B-17's gingen totaal verloren, 600 man. Bovendien nog tientallen B17's die nadien afgeschreven konden worden. Na deze aanval volgde pas 2 maanden later nóg een aanval op Schweinfurt; resultaat nogmaals rampzalig voor de Amerikanen. De escorte-jagers hadden op dat moment een bereik tot de Nederlands/Belgisch-Duitse grens; pas in februari/maart 1944 kregen de Amerikanen een escorte-jager (P51 Mustang) die tot bijvoorbeeld Berlijn de B17's en B24's konden escorteren. Het bombarderen overdag door grote aantallen zware bommenwerpers was in feite een 'learning on the job', want dit was voordien nog nooit toegepast; dit begon op heel kleine schaal in augustus 1942. Duitsland zelf werd aangevallen vanaf januari 1943. In de loop van 1944 werd het overdag bombarderen effectief - pas na de Duitse overgave in mei 45 werd de werkelijkheid stukje bij beetje openbaar gemaakt. Niet tijdens de oorlog, vanuit het oogpunt van geallieerde propaganda.... Het moreel en de publieke opinie moest strijdbaar gehouden worden... Dus zo heroïsch als het voorgesteld wordt was het beslist niet.

Een zeer geromantiseerde serie over de bommenwerpers van de 2e wereldoorlog. De aktie scenes lijken goed maar het uiteindelijke gevolg van aanvallen krijg je niet te zien en dat is jammer. Deze serie is te zoetsappig en geeft niet het gevoel dat je midden in een oorlog zit zoals bij Band of Brothers of The Pacific. Het is allemaal niet spannend genoeg.

A highly romanticized series about the bombers of the Second World War. The action scenes seem good, but you don't get to see the ultimate consequences of attacks and that is a shame. This series is too sappy and doesn't give the feeling that you are in the middle of a war like Band of Brothers or The Pacific. It's all not exciting enough.

Ik heb nu alle afleveringen gezien van Masters of the air. Mijn conclusie: Te zoetsappig o.v.v. (te geromantiseerd) met zielloze personages zonder enige diepgang. Inclusief de eindeloze trage dialoge(s) om helemaal niets. Naja... Wellicht om tijd te rekken, om extra afleveringen te kunnen leveren, op afspraak van streamdienst Apple. In dit draadje is meermaals aangegeven dat je deze serie niet zou 'mogen' linken aan: Band of Brothers. Maar aangezien de zelfde maker van Masters of the air deze link veelvuldig, legt in haast elke marketing campaign: "The producers of Band of Brothers". Is er dus feitelijk wel degelijk een link met Band of Brothers. Het is haast abject om te stellen dat Masters of the air nooit even goed zou kunnen scoren omdat het grotendeels in de lucht afspeelt t.o.v. de grond, zoals te lezen in meerdere reacties. Om een voorbeeld te noemen: Das Boot, van een andere director, jaren hiervoor, bewijst immers het tegendeel in het water, met een even beperkt werkveld dito zichtbeeld als in de lucht wat betreft oorlogvoering. De serie Masters of the air gekoppeld aan het haast eindeloos budget is mijns inziens het kijken niet waard.

But since the same creator of Masters of the air frequently makes this link, in almost every marketing campaign: "The producers of Band of Brothers".

So there is actually a link with Band of Brothers. It is almost abject to say that Masters of the air could never score as well because it largely takes place in the air compared to the ground, as can be read in several responses. To give an example: Das Boot, by another director years before, proves the opposite in the water, with a field of view that is just as limited as in the air in terms of warfare. In my opinion, the series Masters of the air coupled with the almost endless budget is not worth watching.
