A Murder at the End of the World plot

Darby Hart is an amateur detective and a tech-savvy hacker. Reclusive billionaire Andy sends Darby and eight other guests an invitation. They are allowed to participate in a retreat in a remote and dazzling location. When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must use all her skills to prove it was murder before the culprit takes another life.

Goede, trage, serie, die geen moment verveelt. Moest wel even schakelen met de terugblikken telkens maar dat went ook.

Good, slow series that is never boring. I had to switch gears a bit with the retrospectives, but I got used to it.

Haha laatste aflevering is met zn 40min dan echt kort, als dan de eerste 3 afleveringen rond 65min zitten. De serie in zijn geheel is gewoon top, maar de laatste aflevering en zo ook het einde, mocht me nou net wel wat meer zijn, maar ik hou het wel op mijn eerdere 8/10. Wel bewijs, dat een eerder tragere opbouw van serie/film, niet persé saai hoeft te zijn, maar juist boeiend.

Haha the last episode is really short at 40 minutes, while the first 3 episodes are around 65 minutes. The series as a whole is just great, but the last episode and so is the ending, could have been a bit more, but I'll keep it at my previous 8/10. Proof that a rather slower build-up of series/film does not necessarily have to be boring, but rather fascinating.

Aflevering 1 begint wat saai en met een nogal traag tempo - ik bleef alleen hangen voor de fijne cinematografie eigenlijk. Naar het einde toe begint er dan eindelijk wat te gebeuren, en over de afleveringen heen bouwt er zelfs wat mysterie en spanning op. Mooie production values, fijn plaatjeskijken op IJsland en in het evil endboss lair. Maar dan komt de ontknoping langzamerhand, en die stelt toch wat teleur. Sowieso is de cliffhanger aan het einde van aflevering 5 flauw en goedkoop, komt daar in deel 6 te weinig vervolg op om de opgebouwde spanning waar te maken, en deel 7 voelt aan alsof er vanwege de ratings alsnog maar even een afgeraffeld einde aan gehannest is - met in vergelijking met de rest ineens tenenkrommend slecht acteren en een paar technische missers van jewelste. Triest om aan het einde ineens zo'n enorme gap in mijn suspension of disbelief te voelen, het verpest eigenlijk het geheel. Jammer, want er waren toch best wat scherpe observaties die ook echt fijn reflecteren op de maatschappij en de stand van de techniek. Het blijft wel een aardige serie - wat ik al zei, de production values zijn op een erg hoog niveau, de acteurs zijn behoorlijk goed tot erg goed, en de soundtrack inclusief muziekje bij de credits is heel fijn. Wel jammer dat de hoofdrol van Emma Corrin over de afleveringen heen steeds meer gaat lijken op een kloon van Kristen Stewart - ik las een review op imdb waar dat gedropt werd, en dat gaat niet meer weg als je het een keer in je hoofd hebt. Maar het grote probleem, de olifant in de serie is gewoon echt het schrijfwerk van de laatste twee afleveringen. Jammer, Marling en Batmanglij kunnen veel beter.

Episode 1 starts off a bit boring and with a rather slow pace - I only stuck around for the nice cinematography actually. Towards the end, something finally starts to happen, and over the episodes, some mystery and tension even builds up. Nice production values, nice looking at pictures in Iceland and in the evil endboss lair. But then the denouement slowly comes, and that is a bit disappointing. In any case, the cliffhanger at the end of episode 5 is weak and cheap, there is too little follow-up in part 6 to make the built-up tension come true, and part 7 feels like a rushed ending was finally tried for the sake of the ratings - with suddenly toe-curlingly bad acting compared to the rest and a few technical blunders of the highest order. Sad to suddenly feel such a huge gap in my suspension of disbelief at the end, it actually ruins the whole thing. Too bad, because there were quite a few sharp observations that also really reflect nicely on society and the state of technology.

It remains a nice series - as I said, the production values are at a very high level, the actors are quite good to very good, and the soundtrack including the music during the credits is very nice. Too bad that the lead role of Emma Corrin increasingly starts to look like a clone of Kristen Stewart over the episodes - I read a review on imdb where that was dropped, and that never goes away once you have it in your head. But the big problem, the elephant in the series is really the writing of the last two episodes. Too bad, Marling and Batmanglij can do much better.
