Oogappels plot

Social media, pressure to perform, drugs, designer clothes, sex: the social pressure on parents to do more than good for the education of their adolescents is recognizable to many people. In 'Oogappels' we follow four different families in a medium-sized Dutch city. Their children attend the same high school. The parents all have their own way of parenting. But for all of them, they set the bar very high for themselves and the apples of their eyes: life must above all be perfect!

Oogappels season 1

Three generations try to deal with each other and with themselves. The older couples break the fourth wall with wisdom and perspective. The adults struggle with personal and professional issues. Young people rebel, experiment, experience an identity crisis, discover their sexuality, have doubts about their study choice, are tired of school or addicted to their smartphone. They are believable characters with recognizable problems.

Newly blended families occur. After an adultery, children move back and forth between two households. The title is ironic, because there can be clashes between parents and teenagers. Bracha van Doesburgh plays a single parent who tries so hard that she threatens to become overprotective. Other standouts are Eva Van der Gucht - a Flemish woman who speaks with a Dutch accent - and former Antwerp city poet Ramsey Nasr, but the entire ensemble cast does well.

Oogappels season 7

I watched this series with great pleasure for 6 seasons. I even really liked the Christmas movie.

This final and concluding season was a major disappointment for me. It started off reasonably well with the character Merel giving an employee a dressing-down. But after that, for 10 episodes, it was one long slew of preaching, self-insight, and victimhood.

Whereas the previous seasons still had plot developments, sharpness, and humor, this final season seems just like a Postbus 51 commercial that lasts even longer than a funeral marathon in a retirement home.

I sincerely hope that this season can make a positive contribution as teaching material in schools for students who need everything spoon-fed. But as a viewer who wants something more than just moralistic drivel, this series is no longer suitable.

And for the sake of clarity, I am a left-wing thinker, but I feel that this series is merely preachy and didactic, and thereby completely misses the mark.

Is it all terrible, then? Yes, actually it is. Everything meanders, is underdeveloped, and has the depth of a Hallmark card. Only the clothing style of the character Nina and the storyline about the difficult relationship with her mother were fine, but even there boredom sets in quickly when, for the umpteenth time, you are told as a viewer how you are supposed to live.

The previous seasons of Oogappels were excellent and deserve much praise, but this ending is severely substandard and adds nothing.

A huge disappointment!
