In 1986 there was movie The Mosquito Coast. With a very young Hellen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Now there is a 7-part series of the same name after the book by Paul Theroux, the uncle of protagonist Allie Fox (Justin Theroux). The screenplay comes from Neil Cross, who previously proved his qualities for series such as Luther and Spooks.
Allie Fox is an inventor. That's a nice fact, a main character with principles that go beyond honesty and justice. Allie wants a better world and can make ice from fire, for example, and biofuel from frying fat. Where do you find them these Willie Roots? Allie fights against consumerism, is driven and radical, and of course has a secret from the past. So much for the good news, because after two episodes there is little left of this activism. In that sense, the series is quite different from the movie.
In a mix of The Fugitive, Ozark and above all a lot of road trip, The Mosquito Coast is surprisingly slow, predictable and boring. I don't feel much chemistry with Allie and his family, which includes wife Margot (Melissa George). There are some thriller elements, some action, but also an exceptional amount of dialogue between the family members. And most of the time, they're completely uninteresting, taking all the pace out of what should have been a smooth adventure. There will be an S2. I'm curious. Not.
