Vliegende Hollanders plot

Anthony Fokker and Albert Plesman, two aviation pioneers who stood at the cradle of civil aviation in the early 20th century. Two men with the same enthusiasm and passion for flying, but who couldn't be more different from each other. Yet they can't get around each other. Plesman needs planes to save the ailing KLM and Fokker needs a big customer to sell his planes. Despite their struggle, together they manage to make the Netherlands an important player on the world aviation stage during the interwar period.

Familiedrama over luchtvaartpioniers Anthony Fokker (Fedja van Huet/Bram Suijker) en Albert Plesman (Daan Schuurmans/Steef de Bot) in de tijdsspanne 1919 - 1939, het interbellum. De serie focust met name op de rivaliteit tussen de idealistische maar zakelijke familieman Plesman en de opportunistische maar getormenteerde Fokker. Het levert, zeker in de tweede helft, een boeiende serie op. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat hier kosten noch moeite gespaard zijn om het tot een visueel spectakel te maken. Alle oude toestellen komen op één na, allemaal uit de computer via animatietechnieken. En waar die techniek meestal wordt gebruikt om zaken weg te poetsen, worden ze hier juist ingezet om iets toe te voegen. Met spectaculair resultaat. Een van de hoogtepunten is de vliegrace van de Uiver naar Australië. Knap gedaan. De visual effects zijn concurrerend met series van alle bekende streamingsdiensten. Het acteerwerk is uitstekend. Helaas valt er wel het nodige aan te merken op het verhaal. Dat komt nogal traag op gang, vraagt geduld en is zeker de eerste afleveringen erg fragmentarisch. Maar als je doorzet kun je uiteindelijk trots zijn op dit kwaliteitsproduct uit Nederland.

Family drama about aviation pioneers Anthony Fokker (Fedja van Huet/Bram Suijker) and Albert Plesman (Daan Schuurmans/Steef de Bot) in the period 1919 - 1939, the interwar period. The series mainly focuses on the rivalry between the idealistic but businesslike family man Plesman and the opportunistic but tormented Fokker. It makes for a fascinating series, especially in the second half. Not least because no expense has been spared here to make it a visual spectacle. All but one of the old devices come from the computer via animation techniques. And where that technique is usually used to polish things away, they are used here to add something. With spectacular results.

One of the highlights is the flight race from the Uiver to Australia. Well done. The visual effects are competitive with series from all major streaming services. The acting is excellent. Unfortunately, there is a lot to criticize about the story. That starts rather slowly, requires patience and is certainly very fragmentary in the first episodes. But if you persevere, you can ultimately be proud of this quality product from the Netherlands.

Zonde zoveel geld, moeite en goed spel van de acteurs. Maar het barst van de regiefouten en onjuistheden! Ze spreken een taal die recent nog als hedendaagse "straattaal" werd genoemd met omgangsvormen uit deze eeuw. Als klap op de vuurpijl kwam nog de grootste blunder (van de eeuw?) een kantoortuin op het KLM kantoor, absurd en totaal niet overeenkomstig de werkelijkheid! De kantoortuin werd pas in de jaren-70 in Nederland ge-introduceert! Het algemene beeld komt zo NIET overeen met de jaren 20 en 30 dat het gewoon pijn doet aan je ogen. Je valt van de ene onzin in een andere anachronisme. Je vraagt je werkelijk af of de rest ook niet bij elkaar is gefantaseerd!

But it is bursting with directorial errors and inaccuracies! They speak a language that was recently referred to as a contemporary "street language" with manners from this century. To top it all off, the biggest blunder (of the century?) was an office garden at the KLM office, absurd and totally out of touch with reality! The open-plan office was only introduced in the Netherlands in the 1970s! The overall picture is so NOT similar to the 20s and 30s that it just hurts your eyes. You go from one nonsense to another anachronism. You really wonder if the rest weren't fantasized together too!
