Disappointing.
Dexter is a fun character - I totally agree. Bad enough to make him interesting, but good enough to allow identification (after all, he only kills bad guys): a very smart choice. Also, being outside of society, he notices interesting things about our society, often mixed with a touch of irony and cynicism. And he is strongly portrayed by Michael C. Hall. In short, Dexter's strongest point is without a doubt Dexter.
But Dexter is more than Dexter, and the rest of the series is considerably less strong. Audiovisually it is mediocre, but more importantly the quality of the plot and characters outside of Dexter is very low. It often feels a bit like a B-thriller, with quirky side characters and clichéd opponents (the killer turns out to be Dexter's brother ... seriously?). In all honesty, I just don't like the genre, but I was hoping Dexter's character would make up for that. But unfortunately.
I haven't seen all the episodes, so I'll abstain from voting, but I personally don't see Dexter's genius. Dexter is a nice character, but the quality of the rest of the series is in my opinion below par, and unfortunately that cannot disguise one strong character. Unfortunately.

I knew almost nothing about the Dexter series, except for the infamous ending, but decided to give this one a go. This is exactly what I like: a case that lasts a whole season, twists, an anti-hero as the main character and a good mix of suspense and drama. Of course, the series isn't perfect. For example, I find Rita and her entire storyline very irritating and after a whole season I still don't know most of the names. Wanted to watch this every once in a while, but I'm already on the second season.

Dexter was a genius series about Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter analyst with the Miami PD and a serial killer in his spare time. However, he is not just a serial killer but one who kills real villains. Although Dexter is strange, he seems to lead a normal life. He even has a girlfriend, Rita (Julie Benz), and is wildly popular with his police colleagues including his chief Laguerta (Lauren Velez), Angel Batista (David Zayas), Masuka (CS Lee) and his sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). Only Detective Doakes (Erik King) distrusts him. Dexter is brilliant because the series is well put together and above all because Michael C. Hall knows how to play him so well.
