Following a near 30-year hiatus, Eddie Murphy will return as Axel Foley for a fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop series.
Beverly Hills Cop was released in 1984 and it solidified Eddie Murphy's status as a bankable leading man in Hollywood. It spawned two sequels which were released in 1987 and 1994.
A fourth movie has been planned for decades, but went into development hell, going through various scripts.
Now, Netflix is producing a new movie, titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, and Murphy says the return of original producer Jerry Bruckheimer was key in finally getting the project off the ground.
"Jerry Bruckheimer, the original producer. When he got involved, and he started developing the script, and he knew what Beverly Hills Cop was supposed to be. When he got back involved, that's when it all started to come together," Murphy previously told Collider.
"Because we tried for years and years, maybe 10, 12 years, and I must have read five or six different scripts, and it was never right. The studio was like, 'Let's go. Here it is.' It was like, 'It’s just not it.' Jerry Bruckheimer got back in there, and he knows his shit, and he put it together.
"He did just last year, and Bad Boys is Jerry Bruckheimer. So we have that same brain behind Beverly Hills Cop, and he put all the pieces in place that were required for us to make a great movie. And I'm excited for people to see it.”
In September of 2022 it was confirmed that Paul Reiser, Judge Reinhold, Bronson Pinchot and John Ashton will be reprising their respective roles from the trilogy, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon arrive as new faces in the series.
Beverly Hills Cop 3 is garbage
Murphy has never really hidden his disdain for Beverly Hills Cop 3, but says Axel is still the role he is most known for by people in the street.
"The third Beverly Hills Cop was garbage," Murphy insisted.
"Those movies, when I travel overseas, people say, 'Hey, Beverly Hills Cop! Axel Foley!' They call me that s***. All the movies I’ve done, and they call me that. If we do that movie , it has to be right."
