When a new project focusing on Star Wars character Lando Calrissian was announced in 2020, it was originally announced as a television series, but plans have now changed, as it will be a movie.
Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in 2018 and received mixed reviews from critics, while it is considered to be a box office bomb, the biggest in the history of the Star Wars series in fact.
At the time of the movie's release, Variety reported that it needed to make $500 million just to break even when accounting for production and marketing costs. Its total worldwide gross was $393m.
One of the highlights of the movie for fans was Donald Glover's performance as Lando, who was played by Billy Dee Williams in the original Star Wars trilogy. A spin-off focusing on the character is being developed by Glover and his brother Stephen Glover, who confirmed the switch from a TV series into a feature-length film.
"It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information," Stephen said on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast.
Variety has received confirmation from Disney and Lucasfilm that the project will indeed be a movie.
Glover previously told GQ that he would only return as Lando if the script excited him.
“I’m not interested in doing anything that is going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheque," he said.
"I would much rather spend time with people I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with. We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say.”
Solo sequel not a priority for Disney
Fans of Solo: A Star Wars Story won't be happy to hear comments from director Ron Howard regarding a potential sequel.
Howard, who stepped into the director's chair after previous directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left over creative differences, doesn't believe a Solo sequel is a priority for the studio.
“The only discussion that I’m aware of about a sequel for Solo is coming from the fans at this point," the director revealed to NME.
“I don’t think it’s a Lucasfilm priority, as I understand it.
Howard did go on to say that a sequel was not out of the question for the future, however.
“There’s some great characters launched, and the folks from Lucasfilm love the fans and really do listen so I would never say never – but I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or deal with that particular set of characters," he explained.
