The writer of the first two Scream movies, Kevin Williamson, has urged franchise producers to pay Neve Campbell what she deserves to return for Scream VII.
Campbell is the leader of the franchise and has starred in five out of the six movies that have been produced so far. She sat out Scream VI after revealing her dissatisfaction with the salary offer from the studio.
“As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream," she wrote on Instagram during pre-production.
“I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
That left the writers having to alter the script slightly, as although Sidney Prescott was mentioned in Scream VI, Campbell didn't actually appear. The movie was still a hit and Scream VII will arrive next year, but Williamson is desperate for Campbell and Sidney to return.
“I know her well. I love and adore her, and that’s what she did and it’s great for her," he said on the Happy Horror Time podcast.
"I love everyone involved with 'Scream' and all I can say is pay her the money. Yes, you heard it, everyone. That’s what I would do. I would give her that. One day, they’ll figure that all out.”
The last two Scream movies have focused on a younger batch of heroes taking on Ghostface, with Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding starring.
Campbell will always be Scream's Final Girl
Even though the franchise has moved on to another group of potential victims, Campbell's co-star Skeet Ulrich says Campbell will always be Scream's "final girl".
“She’s the final girl, no doubt. But yeah, I think she misses it, all of it and everything," the Scream actor, who returned as Billy Loomis in Scream VI, explained.
"This is new to me — I did and then a big jump, we didn’t have this kind of thing obviously because of the pandemic for, so this is like years and years’ of growth. So I think she has more to miss. To me, it’s new and exciting.”
In the Scream reboot in 2022, it is revealed that Sam Carpenter is the daughter of serial killer Billy Loomis.
