Disney have announced a Lion King prequel which will be released in 2024.
In 2019, a live-action remake of The Lion King was released to enormous commercial success.
On a budget of $250 million, it earned an astonishing $1.663 billion worldwide which makes it the current seventh highest-grossing movie of all time.
Critically, the reception was positive, particularly for the voice performances, but negativity surrounded the lack of emotion on the faces of the characters compared to the beloved 1994 original.
Disney is currently holding its annual D23 Expo and one of the announcements at the event was for a prequel which will be titled Mufasa: The Lion King.
The story will be part prequel and part sequel, allegedly akin to The Godfather Part II.
It will focus on how Mufasa became the king of pride rock, while also dealing with the aftermath of the events of The Lion King. The story will be told via Rafiki, Timon and Pumba.
Barry Jenkins will direct.
Live-action Snow White announced
Disney also announced that a live-action Snow White movie will be produced for a 2024 release.
Rachel Zegler will play Snow White, while Gal Gadot has been cast as her evil stepmother.
This follows a recent trend from Disney of producing live-action remakes of cartoon classics.
The Lion King, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, The Lady and the Tramp and Pinocchio have all received remakes over the last decade.
