Chris Hemsworth says it is likely that his next appearance as Thor will be his last if a fifth movie in the franchise ever materialises.
After making his debut as the character in the original Thor, he went on to star in Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Hemsworth has also made numerous appearances as the God of Thunder in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing a key role in all of the Avengers movies.
Thor remains the only character within the MCU to have received four movies so far, though there is a new Captain America in production titled Captain America: New World Order.
When asked by Vanity Fair if he would ever play Thor again, he responded:
"I don't know. I think there'd be more to say if the people want to hear me say it.
"Look, I'm completely open to it, if there is something unique and fresh and unexpected to do with the character and the world. I've always loved the experience. I've been very thankful I've been able to do something different each time."
A fitting finale for Thor
Characters from the original Avengers team like Captain America and Iron Man, played by Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. respectively, have already completed their arcs within the MCU, while the two actors have retired from the roles.
Hemsworth is eager for a fitting end to his version of Thor, too.
"I feel like we'd probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that," the Australian actor explained.
"I feel like it'd probably be the finale, but that's not based on anything anyone's told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don't know—am I at that stage? Who knows?"
At the conclusion of Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel added a 'Thor Will Return' snippet in the closing credits.
Both Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi have indicated previously that they would be open to a return if the other did.
