Dan Light's parents were killed by Native Americans and his white foal also disappeared. Light is now a grown man and he hunts horses for the benefit of the army. Meanwhile, he keeps looking for his missing horse. He eventually finds the horse, but the horse manages to flee from him. Later, Light notices that the horse has since been captured and is being abused by the military. He steals the horse and runs away. He comes across an army unit and thinks they are after him. At that moment the soldiers are attacked by Indians and they take the horses from the soldiers. Light is left alone with the only horse that hasn't been stolen. It is his job to get help from the fortress.
