The year is 1851. Now that white men have conquered the western United States from the Native Americans, they are short of women. Especially on the big 'Roy Whitman Ranch' in California. Led by prairie man Buck Wyatt, a caravan of 138 women heads from Chicago to the Roy Whitman Ranch. They go to their husbands, whom they married with the gauntlet. This arduous journey over the Rocky Mountains and through the desert is not without its dangers.

Fairly original as a starting point for this western. A fact that goes back to the historical situation, during the Wild West, of a shortage of women on the west coast of North America. Naturally adapted into the director's own story. The western is beautifully developed and is smoothly told/shown. A few situations between men and women, or between women themselves, reactions from women, are indeed somewhat stereotypical; but perhaps also to be expected under such circumstances. Indeed a number of jokes in between; such as: during Buck's search for Ito, there were already some suspicions about the outcome..., the dog has been mentioned here before, shooting skills and lessons. A pleasant whole to look at.

Western with a very special "charge"...

Starts well with the explanation of the entire, unusual project, the "recruitment" of the women, and then develops into an adventurous, almost epic event.

Not that it always reaches great heights, because there are also weaker moments, but it remains varied and keeps the tension going.

Some strong performances in which I personally mainly quote John McIntire, but Denise Darcel is also beautiful, while Hope Emerson often provides the comic-energetic cheerful note.

The western sets looked quite real in a western that is quite special in terms of content in the genre.

Western lovers should not miss this.

In Westward the Women the leading role is reserved for the tough Rod Taylor, but it is mainly the women who hold their own. Women in westerns. They usually come off badly. They are creatures that fall around the neck of the tough hero in the average western and whose role is not to be a burden to the male hero. Although the ultimate goal of the women in this film is to win over a man, they first have to get to where the men are.

To this end, led by Taylor, they undertake a dangerous journey from Chicago to California. A journey by covered wagon. A journey through inhospitable territory. A journey through Indian territory. A journey that will claim victims. A journey that many men would thank very much for. Not these women. Westward the Women is a film in which women ride horses, shoot, get dirty and shout 'Yihaa' very loudly.

The pioneering spirit of the women is strong. They suffer a bit. Just like the male pioneers who headed west years earlier did. Fascinating to see how the women lead their mules over dangerous terrain. Or how they defend themselves against an attack by Indians. Pleasant viewing that is not really very exciting but very entertaining. It is also very nice to observe the group dynamics. Friendships arise. Feuds are born.

But no matter how hard and tough the women are, they remain women with a critical eye for aesthetics. “Do you ever... shave? You always look so dirty” says a woman to Taylor who does not respond. However, at one point he does say the following: “There's two things in this world that scare me, and a good woman is both”. Yes, that Rod Taylor has an idea. Westward the Women is not very exciting, but it does provide fun entertainment.
