On a snowbound ranch, a family is threatened by internal conflict and a cunning, life-threatening predator. Curt Bridges (Robert Mitchum) is one of the three sons of the stern Ma Bridges who rules at home and her weak husband who is an alcoholic. When the ranch's cattle fall prey to the elusive beast, Curt and his brothers Arthur and Harold are forced to confront the animal to save the family's herd. Their young girl next door, Gwen, stirs up tensions - and passions - as the family crisis reaches its peak.
