Told in the Hills plot

A dying Kentucky woman asks her sons to care for her ward, Ann Belleau. The request is ignored by the youngest son, Charles Stuart, who makes love to her and then marries another woman in New Orleans. The eldest son, Jack, marries Ann so that her child will have a name, but then abruptly leaves her his possessions and becomes a prospector and guide in Montana.
