Brothers James (Robert Preston) and Tom Cloud (Robert Sterling) share a dark past. While James, known as "Kid Wichita", still clings to this, Tom tries to build a quiet life on his small ranch, helped by his youngest brother Jeff (John Drew Barrymore). When James suddenly reappears, not only does tension between the two brothers rise again, but it also causes problems with neighboring ranchers. When even Jeff begins to look up to James, Tom thinks it's time for James to pack his bags.
