Twelve-year-old Bobby Sawyer foils a bank robbery in Halfway, Texas, and the grateful residents persuade his parents Doc and Minerva Sawyer to settle in Halfway. The gang that saw the bank robbery fail then becomes more active, prompting the sheriff to suspect Doc Sawyer of all criminal activity. Jim Barton, the deputy sheriff who has fallen in love with Nellie, the daughter of the Sawyers, is assigned to investigate the case. Barton interrogates Doc Sawyer and finds that Doc is in possession of a tobacco pouch that recently contained gold stolen from a nearby mine.
