The Man from Painted Post plot
To find out who is behind the cattle thefts that have hit the ranchers hard, detective "Fancy Jim" Sherwood of the "Cattleman's Protective Association" poses as a rookie from the east. He pretends he can't ride a horse, throw a lasso, and don't know how to handle weapons. Sherwood discovers that Bull Madden is in charge of the cattle thieves. This Madden harasses the teacher Jane Forbes, whom Sherwood has a crush on.
