Captain Robert MacClaw is an army doctor. When a cavalry commander is killed, MacClaw is the highest in rank. MacClaw is expected to take command despite having little combat experience. After overcoming the doubts of his men, he is able to fend off an attack by Native Americans and rescue a caravan of pioneers. But improvising in other military situations turns out MacCraw not to be a brilliant strategist.
