Larry Day is entering a rodeo competition when Starr Landerson calls him Gary Elliott and asks him why he's competing under a different name. After the match, Larry is arrested for the murder of Belle Turner by Sheriff Blaine. Lafe Turner, Belle's father, identifies him as the killer. Pop Greer helps Larry flee. Pop knows that rancher Gary Elliott looks just like Larry. Pop arranges a meeting between the two at the home of Native American Danny Lightfoot by telling Gary he has information about Belle's murder. Gary becomes intoxicated and Larry changes his clothes with him. A posse arrives and shoots Elliott dead. Larry, dressed as Gary, drives to the Elliott ranch and hopes to prove that Elliott was Belle's killer. Larry finds out that Elliott has loaned $100,000 to Starr Landerson to buy cattle, but most of her cattle have been stolen. He also discovers that there is a gold mine on Starr's ranch and that it is convenient for Elliott's business partners that Starr cannot pay off the loan.
