In 1885, a vein of valuable mineral is discovered in the Redwood mine owned by banker William Stoner. The National Steel Company signs a contract with Stoner that pays him a huge sum for the mine's proceeds. Stoner's attorney Sam Ballard appears to be a respected citizen, but in reality he is a greedy con man. Ballard becomes Stoner's silent partner and makes him perform extreme activities. When it is discovered that the vein extends under Steve Clayton's ranch, Ballard orders Steve to be killed.
