Shortly after the Civil War ends, Federal Commissioner Wade Shattuck organizes a criminal gang to carry out robberies in Texas. The gang robs a stagecoach with $100,000 in salary payments for the Union army, and the gang also kills the stagecoach's cavalry escort. The cavalryman Lieutenant Ross Kincaid is blamed for the robbery and he is captured. In San Antone he awaits the verdict of the court martial. In Mustang, Texas, rancher Clint Wheeler robs stagecoaches with his gang and distributes the stolen money among the local farmers so they can pay Shattuck's exorbitant taxes. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Ross Kincaid deserts to clear his name and solve the string of stagecoach robberies in Texas.
