Nishko is the son of a chief, in the time before the Europeans entered the country. During his rite of passage into adulthood, he is determined to tame a horse. His tribe is confronted by a neighboring tribe that wants to break a peace pact, and then troubles ensue: three women from their tribe are kidnapped, his horse falls ill and his mother falls into a coma from a bite from a rattlesnake...
