In Lincoln County, there is a family feud between the Bonneys and the McSweens, with frequent shootings. William H. Bonney flees to New Mexico where he engages in robberies and murders as an outlaw. One day, William, now known as 'Billy the Kid', rescues Pat Garrett from the Indians and the two become friends. When Pat is appointed sheriff, he puts a lot of effort into Billy the Kid to get him back on track and even arranges a meeting with Governor Lew Wallace to request an amnesty for Billy the Kid. Billy turns out to be tough.
