Mail rider Gene Autry is robbed and left for dead in the desert. Gene manages to survive the incident by catching a wild horse, which he can use to flee the desert. Gene continues to use the horse to capture other horses, which he wants to sell to the government. But there are more privateers on the coast for the government contract to sell horses. Autry finds in Ford a competitor who will use all means to defeat Autry.
