A series of circumstances forces deserted cavalryman Bart Lash to assume the identity of his slain commander. In this rank, Lash is put in charge of a caravan of settlers moving through the Pawnees' territory. At first he tries to get out of this, but Lash, who has fallen in love with Christella Burke, eventually takes his assignment seriously, restoring his innate courage and self-esteem. Along the way, Lash is betrayed by the shady settler leader Tillotson, who sells weapons to Rasacura, the chief of the Pawnees.
