"'IT'S GOT THE KICK OF 20 MULES!'"
1892, Death Valley. The extraction of borax (sodium salt) from the mines has virtually come to a standstill because the yields no longer outweigh the costs. On the run from the law, Bill Bragg forms an alliance with the outlaw Stag Roper. Bragg has found and buried a dead man he believes to be a valuable mine. Roper knows the mine's value but needs Bragg to find it. They want to register the mine together and get rich. Meanwhile, Roper sets his sights on the beautiful Jean, who in turn suspects him of trying to rip off Bragg.
