A priest finds himself faced with the ultimate ordeal as a small Italian village fights off the Nazi invasion in this jaw-dropping WWII drama. Despite the increasing presence of the Germans, the inhabitants of Vaiano try to resume their daily lives. Among them is Don Paulo (Anthony La Paglia), a silent priest who helps the inhabitants through the horrors of war. As the war rages around them, he tries to win the battle in his heart. He has fallen in love with Adriana (Embeth Davidtz), a beautiful woman who also loves him. When a group of mercenaries needs help to approach the Americans so they can tell them where the Nazis are hiding, Don Paulo takes on this dangerous task. But when he disappears during his mission, Adriana - who believes he has been killed - offers to take his place. This decision changes their lives forever.
