What a movie. Quinn is fantastic as a good guy who moves from one party to another without really seeing the consequences. The last hour is particularly impressive.

4.5*

Good war drama in which a Catholic Romanian farmer is mistaken as a Jew at the beginning of the Second World War. An entertaining story, and also compellingly filmed. Just not always believable, especially because of the naivety of the main character, where it seems as if he has no idea that a war is going on. Anthony Quinn carries the film single handedly.

Clever drama about a Romanian farmer who is separated from his family during WWII through the intervention of a corrupt police officer who has a crush on his wife. I can call it original because Johann's wanderings and ultimately his survival are caused by the nonsensical war bureaucracy in which everyone is divided into boxes quite arbitrarily. When he is declared the archetype of the Aryan race in the context of racial theories, he is put in a German suit. Great scene!! The ridicule and satire made the film a true experience, but you have to be sensitive to it. It is a lighter film about the second war that deliberately places an ordinary man in unusual situations, and never loses sight of the tragedy of the war. Not a standard war film, but as far as I'm concerned the point has been made. Based on a well-known book. Another fine program on Arte, although I hope that not 15 minutes of the film has been cut because it lasted 115 minutes while the running time here indicates 130.
