The Chairman plot
"If the Red Chinese don't kill him... a computer in London will!"
The Chinese government has succeeded in developing a precious enzyme that allows crops to grow in any climate. Wanting to duplicate the enzyme, the Americans, with the help of the Russians, send scientist John Hathaway to China to steal the formula. During this dangerous mission, Hathaway only communicates with his clients through a transmitter implanted in his skull. In China, the scientist is on his own, because only the mysterious Chang Shou can come to his aid in dire need. What Hathaway doesn't know is that the implant in his skull contains explosives so the government can take him out if he fails.

Amateur League
With Thompson at the helm and Peck in front of the camera, the viewer might well expect a decent spy film. Unfortunately, the outcome turns out to be a disappointment, and it all feels like an amateurish Bond.
The camerawork is very mediocre, with the frequent zooms becoming irritating on their own. However, the most idiotic aspect is the poor editing, which, combined with the score, is sometimes hilarious. Furthermore, the clumsy story has very little substance, and suspense is nowhere to be found anyway.

A spy film set in Mao's China. Rather explanatory and unsubtle in some areas as it aims to lay bare the ideological differences between Americans and Chinese. Like that personal dialogue between Hathaway and Mao. As if that were even possible. In any case, it reflects a bit more openness and interest from the US following the paranoid witch hunt against communists in the 1950s.
The film follows a rather classic pattern, making it a truly surpriseless ride: receive an assignment, infiltrate, steal, escape... And to say that it disappointed me, no, not really.
